Hazmat Spill at TEMCO

Shortly before 6:00 am on Thursday April 8,2010 Fuller Hose was dispatched to Electric Materials Co for a reported Hazmat spill.  Chief 200 arrived on scene reporting that a full evacuation of the building was in process with at least 7 patients injured requesting the Erie County Hazmat Team to the scene.  Engine 204 arrived and began assisting EMS with triaging patients.  Utility 219 arrived shortly after and was used as a command post.  Once the Hazmat Team arrived and made entry into the building it was determined that the chemicals spilled where in a unsafe condition to allow employees back into the building.  The Engine Crew then assisted employees with gathering their belongings so they could return to their vehicles and go home.  In all 21 patients where transported to Hamot and St. Vincent's for exposure to the chemical reaction.  The NEFD was assisted by Harborcreek VFD, Fairfield VFD, Ripley Hose Co, South Ripley Hose Co, Westfield FD, ECI, Erie County Hazmat and Erie County EMA.  Chief 200 had the Electric Materials command.  The incident is being investigated by the NEFD and Erie County EMA.
