Woods Fire on Sidehill Rd.

Fuller Hose was dispatched on Tuesday May 15,2007 around 1215 pm for a reported brush fire on Sidehill Rd L-2 arrived on scene and reported approx. ½ acre burning in a wooded area. Due to high winds the fire tripled in a matter of minutes with flames shooting 50’ into the air. Fuller Brush 216 and Engine 203 arrived on scene and began to make an attack on the fire. Chief 200 arrived on scene establishing command and asking for a tactical channel. Fuller Tanker 206 arrived and began supplying Engine 203. Due to the high winds the fire became very intense, before the brush unit could get ahead of the fire, crews from the Engine stretched a booster reel and a 1 ¾” attack line to knock down the fire. Once the fire was knocked the brush truck went to work trying to stop the fire from burning any further but the fire had gotten up into the trees and began to grow in size. Chief 200 asked for 2 additional tankers and 2 additional Engines bring Fairfield Tanker 265, Harbor Creek Engine/Tanker 225, Fuller Engine 204, and Crescent Engine 212. Engine 212 arrived on scene along with Fairfield Tanker 265; Tanker 265 dropped their Porta Tank next to Engine 212 to supply Engine 203 and Tanker 206. Tanker 265 and Engine/Tanker 225 started a water shuttle from a hydrant approx. 2 miles away. Eng 204 arrived on scene and began assisting the crews on scene with suppression. At this time the crews where fighting approx. At 3 ½ acre woods fire. While the brush truck was making headway on the South side of the fire and the Engine crews were making a stop on the North and East side, the fire jumped approx. 200’ east into another section of the woods. At this time, none of the hose lines stretched could reach the new fire, Chief 200 asked for a brush truck from Kuhl Hose, and an Engine and Tanker from Greenfield. Chief 200 ordered Engine 204 to reposition to the new fire east of the original fire. The crew from Engine 204 stretched a 200’ booster reel to try and slow the fire down before it reached the power line. While Eng. 204 was making an attack on the new fire Crews from Engine 203 added 300’ of forestry line from Tanker 265 to the line that was already almost 600’ long.  Kuhl Hose Brush 689 arrived on scene and assisted the crews with overhaul on the fire. At this point chief 200 called the fire under control. Crews spent almost another hour and a half hitting hot spots and cutting down a dead tree that was still burning. Over all a total of 6 acres of hilly wooded terrain burnt. Crews where on scene for almost 6 hrs. At this time the fire is under investigation. Special thanks go to the N.E.F.D Auxiliary for the cold refreshments.
